The following was written by a student at the Kandahar Health and Development Organization (KHDO),an organization supported by the Canadian International Development Agency in Kandahar City.

I remember the day that I could not go to school and my only fault was being a girl. I was 9 and I was in 3rd class. My friends and me were looking at our old and poor books and only in our homes and hidden from evil eyes.

I had my poor old 3rd class books and with my memories about teachers and my classmates and spent five years with those memories; I was thinking through the night till mornings for my wish to going to school.

Today, five years full of dread and fear was ended. School objectors and girls education opponents, the Taleban were left my city, my homeland of Kandahar and finally the doors of schools have been opened to me and my friends. But still I felt that in my city (Kandahar) being a girl is a barrier to success, so I always felt sad when I have watched the boys of my same age who were about my environment and when they were talking about computer courses and their familiarity with this new technology, and I had a question in that time, why I cant be familiar with this new world.

Me who is eager to learn and study, my great desire was becoming a geographer and geography was my favorite among my school subjects. I thought that I could obtain my wishes and goals easier when I learnt some computer skills. I was getting sad again because my people think the girls going to courses that are out of school time is bad. That was going on until several days ago when my classmates and me were smiled toward each other and we become glad again, oh my god that’s impossible, what a great chance! A free computer course in our school I couldn’t believe it!

Today it is about a month since our computer class started and I have learned a lot, I have great feeling when I sit on the computer chair and I am doing practice, I think I am reaching to my goals gradually but I still have question in my mind. Who gave these computers to our school as gift? I asked from our computer teacher, she answered: Government of Canada with cooperation of an national non-governmental organization.

I appreciate people from and the Government of Canada that gave this chance to me that I can learn computer just the same like boys. Since then I am interested in Canada I found the place where Canada was in our geographical map, which was hanging on the wall of our class, and I hope one day I’ll become a geographer and go to all of the countries in the world and I like to go to Canada too and I am sure I will do it.
