Development Projects

Canada is among the world's top donors to Afghanistan, which is our largest bilateral aid recipient. Canada supports a wide array of development projects in Afghanistan, including three signature projects that represent large-scale, significant contributions to rebuilding the country. The signature projects are on-going, as well as other development projects in the areas of Basic Services, Humanitarian Assistance, and National Institutions.

Project description:
The Vocational Training for Afghan Women project aims to allow women without a source of income – such as widows and refugees – to become more self-sufficient. It is helping these women acquire new skills, allowing them to enter trades that offer more money.
This project is being implemented by the World University Service of Canada and CARE Canada. Its key goal is to help Afghan women find jobs by:
- Identifying possible job market niches.
- Offering job placements and apprenticeships.
Progress to date:
Vocational Training for Afghan Women has achieved the following significant results:
- More than 1,000 graduates have completed training in 13 trade classes.
- Five women’s economic development “shuras”, or consultative bodies, were formed.
