The Accelerated District Reconstruction Program is intended to channel resources quickly and effectively toward the completion of selected reconstruction and development projects identified by local district and village groups. All projects selected for implementation are first endorsed by the Afghan Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development.

The project is responding to locally identified needs in areas such as basic road infrastructure, irrigation, water supply, sanitation, and social services.

Small and medium-sized infrastructure projects are addressing the needs of rural communities, and are being implemented by Afghan contractors or the communities themselves.

Training for Afghan Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development employees to make them more effective in developing projects is being addressed throughout the program.

The Accelerated District Reconstruction Program in Kandahar Province has achieved the following significant results to date:

• Ninety-five small and medium-sized infrastructure projects have been completed, plus 17 projects involving sub contractors have been completed as well. Twenty Afghan Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development employees have benefitted from training activities.
• Tens of thousands of Afghans in and around Kandahar City have benefitted from new infrastructure projects such as improved farm irrigation to cleaner canals.
