Project description:Working with the Asian Development Bank, the Afghan Ministry of Public Works, and local contractors, the Government of Canada is assisting with the completion of the highway between the districts of Spin Boldak and Kandahar City, in Kandahar province.
This 103-kilometre highway is one of the most important roads in Afghanistan and provides:
- A major economic artery for all of southern Afghanistan.
- One of only six major cross-border links with Afghanistan’s neighbours.
- The primary route for the country’s imports and exports.
- One of the two main roads between Pakistan and Afghanistan, used by the many Afghans who still have family and business relations in Pakistan.
Progress to date:The Spin Boldak Highway Construction project has achieved the following significant results to date:
- It has improved access to districts and local markets.
- Access to health clinics, educational facilities, and other public services in district centres, and to Kandahar City, have been improved.
- The effectiveness of security and stabilization activities by national and international security forces has been enhanced.
- The political participation of the rural population has been enhanced and national unity has been strengthened.
