Current phase: 2007-2009
Project budget: $5.2 million
Project description:The Kandahar Rapid Village Development Project helped five villages in Kandahar province by:
- Establishing community-based reconstruction projects, which included refurbishing old school buildings.
- Providing short-term employment to local labourers.
- Improving agricultural productivity, by providing crates to farmers that reduced damage to goods during transport.
Where possible, project materials and supplies, including garments produced by female trainees at local tailoring centers, were obtained from suppliers in Kandahar province.
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funded this project, which Development Works Inc., a social enterprise agency, implemented in collaboration with various Kandahar government departments.
Progress to date:The Kandahar Rapid Village Development Project has achieved the following significant results to date:
- The project established a new water and sanitation infrastructure, which included providing wells to Kandaharis to access clean water and new sewer systems that reduced transmission of communicable diseases.
- It improved roads in targeted villages.
- It supported the reinforcing of local school buildings.
- It promoted the establishment of economic facilities, like community-based bakeries and markets.
- It increased agricultural productivity by helping to establish a production facility for reusable plastic crates that were distributed to farmers. These crates helped to reduce damage to local produce during transportation to markets.
