Kandahar Rapid Village Development Project

Current phase: 2007-2009
Project budget: $5.2 million

The Kandahar Rapid Village Development Project supports community-based reconstruction, provides short-term employment to local labourers, and helps improve agricultural productivity. Implemented by Development Works Inc., in collaboration with various Kandahar government departments, the project is expected to reach up to five villages in the province of Kandahar. Where possible, project materials and supplies, including garments produced by female trainees at local tailoring centres, are obtained from suppliers in the province of Kandahar.

The project is establishing new water and sanitation infrastructure (wells to access clean water and sewer systems to reduce communicable diseases), as well as improving roads in targeted villages. It is also supporting the improvement of local school buildings and the establishment of community-based bakeries, markets, and other economic facilities.

To support agricultural productivity, the project is establishing a production facility for reusable plastic crates. These crates will be distributed to farmers to reduce the damage caused to local produce when being transported to markets.
