Project description:The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) promotes and protects the human rights of Afghans, and investigates alleged human rights violations. The commission is a national institution with regional offices that perform a wide range of activities, such as:
- Advising police, courts, and Parliament on how to enhance laws, systems, or procedures from a human rights perspective.
- Promoting the respect of human rights through research, analysis, and policy advice to public authorities (e.g., producing training manuals and holding workshops for public authorities).
- Monitoring and investigating human rights complaints, focusing on detainees, by tracking information and trends related to government action.
The AIHRC devotes particular attention and resources to addressing the rights of women and children.
Canada is currently the largest donor to the commission, and our funding helps the commission develop its strategic plan.
Progress to date:The Support to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission project has achieved the following significant results to date:
- The commission has Improved the living standards at men’s and women’s prisons in Afghanistan by monitoring prison conditions.
- Standards have also improved at the Children’s Correctional Centre in Kandahar.
- More than 75,000 people have been trained on women’s rights, children’s rights, and the rights of the disabled.
