Project description:The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is providing funding to The Asia Foundation (TAF), which is helping to increase the awareness of democratic processes in Afghanistan through community-based outreach programs, collectively titled Broadening Awareness of Democracy in Afghanistan.
The Broadening Awareness of Democracy project is:
- Improving women's participation in elections by piloting civic education initiatives, targeting house-bound women in rural areas.
- Working with local broadcasters to develop a culturally-appropriate radio drama series targeted to rural audiences that informs listeners about the principles and values of democracy in an accessible way.
- Partnering with local non-governmental organizations, including the Afghan Civil Society Forum, to create a mobile theatre to educate people in provinces in the south (Kandahar) and east (Jalalabad) on the importance of elections and the role of Afghans voters.
- Working with the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan to pilot mock elections in some targeted schools and universities in select cities (i.e. Kabul, Herat, Kandahar and Balkh).
Progress to date:The results of the Broadening Awareness of Democracy in Afghanistan project will be published as soon as possible.
