Afghan Women’s Community Support Project

Current phase: 2008–2011
Project budget: $2.1 million

The War Child project aims to improve the livelihood opportunities, basic education levels, and psycho-social well-being of vulnerable women and their families in the cities of Kabul and Jalalabad. The Afghan Women’s Community Support Project (AWCSP) provides Afghan women with the basic education, vocational skills, and microfinance training they need to become self-sufficient entrepreneurs. Following their training, the participating women receive small loans and ongoing professional and peer support to enable them to launch their own small businesses. The AWCSP aims to:

  • strengthen livelihood opportunities of Afghan women;
  • provide basic education to Afghan women and their pre-school-aged children;
  • contribute to the psycho-social well-being of Afghan women; and
  • enhance the institutional capacity of the Afghan Women’s Community by improving their expertise, technical proficiency, and programming and management competencies for delivering vocational training and micro-credit programming.
