Development Projects

Canada is among the world's top donors to Afghanistan, which is our largest bilateral aid recipient. Canada supports a wide array of development projects in Afghanistan, including three signature projects that represent large-scale, significant contributions to rebuilding the country. The signature projects are on-going, as well as other development projects in the areas of Basic Services, Humanitarian Assistance, and National Institutions.

Project description:
Canada is the sole donor of funds to the World Food Programme (WFP) to run a telecommunications project aimed at supporting the safety and security of humanitarian workers in Afghanistan. This project supports upgrades to humanitarian emergency telecommunications systems for United Nations (UN) agencies. It is providing an upgrade to the existing telecommunications system and training for the humanitarian community with regards to telecommunications issues. This project was defined as a high priority in the 2009 Humanitarian Action for Afghanistan.
Progress to date:
The World Food Programme (WFP) has achieved the following significant results:
- An assessment of humanitarian emergency telecommunications systems in Afghanistan was conducted in May 2009.
- The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster is working with the Government of Afghanistan to develop an agreement on the issue of telecommunications equipment licenses, the import and export of equipment, and United Nations (UN) use.
