Kabul Widows Humanitarian Assistance Project

Current phase: 2008-2011
Project budget: $1.5 million

CARE’s Kabul Widows Humanitarian Assistance project has been responding to the immediate needs of the most vulnerable widows in Kabul. Since its inception in 1997, this project has provided monthly food rations, life skills and health education to thousands of widows and their families. The overall goal of this latest phase of humanitarian assistance is to improve the quality of life of vulnerable women and their families in Kabul through food assistance and integrated social support services.

In addition to food assistance, which represents 80% of the project activities, the project also involves vocational training and support activities to assist vulnerable widows and their dependents to generate modest incomes and to become self-sufficient. The project also helps to decrease the incidence of disease among the widows and their children by offering health, nutrition and sanitation education.
