World Food Program Protracted Relief and Rehabilitation Operation

Current phase: 2009–2010
Project budget: $6 million

The World Food Program (WFP) provides vulnerable and food-insecure Afghans with food aid through emergency relief and community and household asset creation, supporting health and education projects. Emergency food aid targets returnees, internally displaced persons, and other vulnerable groups. Food-for-Education programs include school feeding, oil incentive for girls, and a take-home ration. Food-for-Work activities improve community assets such as canals and basic roadwork. Food-for-Health projects include food aid for tuberculosis patients and their families. For 2009, the WFP is targeting 8.8 million Afghans, distributing an estimated total of 317,000 tonnes of food.
