Statement from Canada's Chargé d’affaires to Afghanistan on World Press Freedom Day

Kabul, May 3nd, 2012 — Ms. Shelley Whiting, Canada's Chargé d’affaires to Afghanistan, issued the following statement on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day:

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to join all those who celebrate the courageous work of those Afghan men and women who risk their lives and their liberty every day to make the truth known.

As demonstrated yesterday during the cowardly attack on the Green Village compound, Afghan journalists are working in a challenging environment and assume great personal risks to report the news to Afghans and to the world.

Canada supports the development of a free, impartial and independent media in Afghanistan. We will continue to work with our Afghan local partners to support the efforts of all Afghans who struggle to maintain a media environment free of censorship, intimidation and interference.”
