Canada Condemns Attack on UN Office in Afghanistan

(April 1, 2011 - 5 p.m. ET) The Government of Canada today issued the following statement condemning the attack on UN staff and Afghan nationals at the UN office in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan:

The Government of Canada condemns in the strongest terms the violent attack on and killing of UN staff and Afghan nationals at the UN office in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan.

This senseless act of violence was carried out by opponents of peace and progress in Afghanistan. Those responsible for this cowardly attack must be held accountable.

At present, no Canadians have been identified among the civilians who were killed or injured.

Canada extends its most sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed in this horrible act and wish a quick recovery to the injured.
