Hockey Day in Kabul | VIEW SLIDESHOW
Canadian development, defense and diplomatic staff, and our friends, played a closely-contested game of street hockey on the road outside the embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, in honour of Hockey Day in Canada. The games started last fall when Ambassador Arif Lalani suggested a pick-up match to allow staff here to get together to boost morale and let off steam, given our limited opportunity for mobility here. A month or so later, Ministers Oda and Bernier visited us at the embassy, bringing some hockey sticks, goalie gear and nets, and we were off. We've since played against our British embassy colleagues across the street, and have been challenged to a match by the Canadian contingent at ISAF HQ. But just like in Canada, we have to call "CAR!" everytime an armoured vehicle clears the checkpoints at either end of our street and drives through, interrupting briefly the play... how Canadian-in-Afghanistan...
