Message from Prime Minister Stephen Harper

Prime Minister Stephen Harper

Canada is deeply involved in building a better future for the people of Afghanistan. While the brave work of the Canadian Forces is the most visible component of our involvement in Afghanistan, our engagement also includes the dedicated effort of numerous diplomats, development workers, police and other professionals.

As our engagement continues to evolve, it is important that we communicate the full extent of our integrated military-civilian efforts, which are vital to the future security and development of Afghanistan.

From now to July 2011, Canada has set its focus on six priorities that are in keeping with proven Canadian strengths, derive from Afghan objectives, and are consistent with the efforts of our international partners.

Canadians are helping the Government of Afghanistan to maintain a more secure environment and establish law and order by mentoring, training and building the capacity of the Afghan National Army and Police, as well as other efforts in the areas of justice and corrections. Canadians are also helping to provide jobs, education, and essential services like water, and provide humanitarian assistance to people in need, including refugees.

I offer my heartfelt thanks to the men and women from the Canadian Forces and from all departments who have fought and worked to protect the people of Afghanistan from the insurgency and to rebuild that country. The work is hard and often dangerous, but you are making a difference. We should be proud of all Canadians who are helping Afghanistan stand on its own and realize its fullest potential.
