UN Security Council Resolutions on Afghanistan

Sgt Frank Hudec

The United Nations Security Council considers two primary resolutions on Afghanistan every year. In the fall, the Council considers extending its authorisation of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) for twelve months and calls upon Member States to contribute personnel, equipment and resources. In the spring, the Council considers extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for twelve months, highlighting recent successes and outlining continued security, governance and development challenges. Since 2001, these resolutions have been unanimously adopted.

The most recent iterations are UNSC Resolution 1890 (2009)UNSC Resolution 1868 (2009)UNSC Resolution 1806 (2008) and UNSC Resolution 1883 (2008). Canada uses these opportunities to express our views on the situation in Afghanistan to the Security Council; we highlight Canada's engagement in Afghanistan over the past year, and we propose initiatives that we believe require greater Afghan government and international community focus.
