"Canada First" Defence Strategy

Canada works with Afghan National Security Forces and international partners to foster a secure environment for governance and development to flourish.

Our efforts are focused on training and mentoring local forces so that they will eventually be in a position to operate independently. Consequently, the critical components of Canada’s security agenda are:

  • police training: a broad approach that includes mentoring, training, financing salaries, building police stations and supplying equipment and uniforms to the Afghan National Police.
  • army training: Canadian soldiers work shoulder to shoulder with soldiers of the Afghan National Army (ANA) to help them become a self-sufficient force, while our mentoring teams work with ANA leadership to extend the authority of the central government throughout the country.
  • justice and corrections: to complement our efforts in the area of police reform, Canada supports initiatives to build a stronger justice and corrections system.

Joint Task Force Afghanistan is the Canadian Forces contingent deployed in Kandahar province and the capital of Kabul. Comprising a battle group, the force protection element of the Provincial Reconstruction Team, mentor and liaison teams, tactical airlift, a national support element, and a national command element, Joint Task Force Afghanistan plays an important role in the UN-mandated, NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
