Governance

UNOPS/Marie Frechon
More than 10 million Afghans registered to vote in parliamentary and presidential elections in 2004 and 2005. Canada will continue to play a key role in assisting the Afghan government in its upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, scheduled for 2009 and 2010.
To strengthen the long-term viability of Afghanistan, Canada is commited to helping the Afghan government strengthen its ability to deliver services to Afghans.
Our governance agenda, which aims to build a more capable and self-reliant Afghan government, is focussed on:
stronger public institutions: providing technical expertise, training, mentoring, equipment, infrastructure and support to key national programs to build a strong government that can sustain reconstruction and development gains in the long-term. This includes mobilizing technical and financial expertise to enable Afghanistan’s Independent Elections Commission to manage the upcoming elections.
- border management: supplementing diplomatic efforts to strengthen regular border dialogue and cooperation between Afghanistan and Pakistan with activities to build more capable border management and security institutions.
reconciliation: supporting Afghan-led political reconciliation initiatives to encourage dialogue, weaken the insurgency and contribute to lasting peace.
To meet these objectives, Canada supports an array of initiatives implemented by trusted partners. We also work directly with Afghan officials through diplomatic channels such as:
the Canadian Embassy in Kabul, where a team of professional diplomats, development officers, and policing and correctional services experts is engaging with Afghan officials to develop effective institutions and processes; and
- the Office of the Representative of Canada in Kandahar, which leads civilian efforts in the province.
